Millstream Farm

Millstream Farm

Millstream Farm, located 3km from the picturesque town of Dullstroom, offers you and your family an idyllic fun-filled holiday where you can relax and enjoy a range of activities. Known as one of South Africa’s leading trout fly fishing resorts, Millstream Farm truly offers it all.

Millstream Farm has 9 weirs, suitable for beginners, with three ponds and five dams, two of which are Trophy Dams (C.A.R.),  for the more experienced fly fisherman. Stocking takes place fortnightly with trout ranging from 350g to 1,5kg. Larger trout (2kg to 4kg) are stocked during the year if a supply is available. Millstream Farm allows the use of waders and kick boats on the larger dams.

Lake Millstream

The Mpumalanga Fly Fishing Association was granted access to Lake Millstream for boat sessions during our second trials of the 2022 season. Lake Millstream is a 10 hectare dam large enough to accommodate float tubes and motorless boats. The Lake has an inlet, outlet and overflow with a very healthy population of trout.

In a three hour competitive boat session, two anglers share a boat and fish it loch style with the wind coming from your back – the drift is controlled and slowed down with a drogue. Anglers cast downwind and are only allowed to fish a 90 degree angle from the centre of the boat. for the first half of the session the one angler is in control of the boat and will make the decisions on where to fish, anglers will rotate places and command of the boat for the second half of the session.

We had three boats / six anglers competing at Lake Millstream in three different sessions – in total we had 9 boat sessions with 18 anglers competing. The anglers battled cold and miserable rainy weather but managed to hook into some proper fish during the sessions.

Lake Millstream produced 22 rainbow trout during the competitive sessions. The average size was in the region of 42 cm but it also produced 2 fish over 50 cm. The trout were in excelent condition and gave a strong fight with a number of anglers also losing some specimens. The inlet and overflow seemed to be the hot spots and damsel imitations produced the most action.
